After returning to Charlotte from the wedding in VA, Charlotte Arrangements was called upon immediately by the designer to assist with another wedding -- this time for one of America’s wealthiest oil families in Fort Worth. From the accolades generated by the previous project, the designer knew that when quality and peace of mind are needed, Charlotte Arrangements is the firm to rely on. The conceptual designs were received and the scale of the project tripled the last--and the time frame was reduced to 15 days. The bride wanted a conservatory built inside and around a 25,000 sq. ft. tent. At no point were the guests to feel as if they were at a tented event -- rather the space would reflect a true conservatory.
On the exterior, a three-dimensional, two-story façade was built from scaffolding wrapped with wood and Plexiglas; it featured protruding niches and functioning doors. The guests entered the “tent” on stairways flanked by Koi ponds and hand-crafted railings. Nine 40’ arches created a barrel roof that ran the entire length of the 132’ tent. The arches were connected by a series of dormers that had Plexiglas inserts and backlighting for effect. The ceiling was an intricate pattern of custom grids concealing the roof of the tent. The skeleton of the 12’ columns and arches was a truss custom-built in the UK and crafted especially for this event.
The custom-built walls of the tent completed the surreal look of the space by incorporating Plexiglas inserts finished with handcrafted etching for design detail. At no point could you discern whether you were in an actual existing conservatory or in a temporary structure built for this one event. The guests and even Sylvia Weinstock, the renowned wedding cake designer who provided the cake for the reception, will have a lasting impression of this event and the exquisite detail of its construction. While meeting with a famed international wedding designer in the Hamptons, Charlotte Arrangements president Clarke Allen was invited to participate in producing a lavish wedding. One of society’s favorite faces was getting married and she wanted to bring 800 of her closest friends and family to her farm in Virginia. Charlotte Arrangements was asked to replicate a gothic revival church inside a horse arena at the farm. The conceptual designs were a beautiful vision that Charlotte Arrangements was honored to turn into reality.
Construction on the project commenced upon return to Charlotte, and within three weeks a three-dimensional church with tongue & groove wooden floors, a Shaker shingle roof, distressed siding and faux stone base was completed. The structure was shipped and set up at the wedding site in Virginia. On the wedding day, the guests, including Katie Couric and the Gov. of Virginia, Mark Warner, entered the church and walked through a grove of burnt orange trees dressed with crystals and orchids. The stage, upon which the ceremony took place, held a custom kneeling bench, an 18’ x 12’ hanging wooden cross and 30’ buttress system – all custom made by Charlotte Arrangements craftsmen. Clarke Allen, owner of Charlotte Arrangements successfully completed the examination to become a Destination Management Certified Professional (DMCP). Requirements for the designation include having been a member of the industry for three or more years and having demonstrated a professional level of responsibility, performance and accountability in the destination management industry.
